Heart of the City Piano Program
History 1995-1996: Ø Volunteer piano program is founded at Pleasant Hill Community School Ø Four volunteer piano teachers serve twelve students Ø Students share a few books and two small keyboards Ø First piano recital held in the spring of 1996 1996-1997: Ø Four volunteer piano teachers serve twelve students Ø Students continue to share books and two small keyboards Ø First year of Christmas piano recital Ø Second year of Spring Piano Recital 1997-1998: Ø Seven volunteer piano teachers serve twenty-seven students at Pleasant Hill Community School Ø Fundraising begins Ø Small keyboards with full size keys are donated and purchased Ø More books are purchased, but students still share books Ø Second year of Christmas piano recital Ø Third year of Spring Piano Recital 1998-1999: Ø Twenty one volunteer piano teachers serve sixty-five students Ø Program expands to Princess Alexandra Community School, King George Community School and Egadz Youth Centre Ø Receive substantial Saskatoon Foundation ArtsSmarts grant, as well as funding from other sources Ø Five full size keyboards along with smaller sixty-one note touch sensitive keyboards Ø Each individual student has his/her own books Ø Students attend their first symphony concert Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø Eleven students participate in the Saskatoon Music Festival for the first time Ø Third year of Christmas piano recital Ø Fourth year of Spring Piano Recital 1999-2000: Ø Fifty-two volunteer piano teachers serve 160 students across Saskatchewan Ø Program expands to include Westmount Community School, Four Directions Retrieval Program and Radius in Saskatoon Ø Program expands provincially to include sites in Prince Albert at Riverside Community School, Moose Jaw at Prince Arthur School and Regina at Ken Jenkins and Haultain Schools Ø Receive substantial SaskCulture grant, another Saskatoon Foundation ArtsSmarts grant, as well as funding from other sources facilitating the provincial expansion Ø Full size keyboards along with smaller sixty-one note touch sensitive keyboards are purchased for the new program sites Ø Each individual student has his/her own books Ø Students attend their third symphony concert Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø Forty-five students participate in the Saskatoon Music Festival Ø Fourth year of Christmas piano recital Ø Fifth year of Spring Piano Recital 2000-2001: Ø Fifty-three volunteer piano teachers serve 165 students across Saskatchewan Ø Program expands provincially to include a new site in Prince Albert at Queen Mary Community School Ø Received substantial CARAS grant, Saskatoon Foundation Cameco Caring Community Grant as well as funding from other sources facilitating the small expansion continuation of the program Ø Smaller sixty-one note touch sensitive keyboards are purchased Ø Each individual student has his/her own books Ø Students attend their fourth symphony concert Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø University of Regina Faculty Recital (20 students & teachers attended in Feb. of that year) Ø 60 students participate in the Saskatoon Music Festival Ø Fifth year of piano recitals held at Christmas Ø Sixth year of piano recitals held in the spring 2001-2002: Ø Fifty-seven volunteer piano teachers serve 180 students across Saskatchewan Ø Program expands nationally to include new sites in Edmonton Ø Received substantial National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation grant, SaskCulture, the Saskatoon Credit Union, the Saskatoon Foundation Cameco Caring Community Grant, Yamaha Music Canada Ltd., the City of Saskatoon, as well as funding from other sources facilitating the expansion and continuation of the program Ø Full size Clavinova pianos are purchased and the pianos are shared amongst program sites in Saskatoon Ø Smaller sixty-one note touch sensitive keyboards are also purchased to accommodate the growing need for instruments Ø Students attend their fifth symphony concert Ø Students from Regina attend the Regina Symphony Orchestra concert Ø Students from Regina attend University of Regina Faculty Recital Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø Students participate in the Regina Music Festival for the first time Ø Over seventy students participate in the Saskatoon Music Festival Ø Sixth year of Christmas piano recital Ø Seventh year of Spring Piano Recital Ø Regina expands its program to include youth from Ranch Ehrlo Society program consisting of two classroom and group homes 2002-2003: Ø Fifty-three volunteer piano teachers serve over 200 students across Saskatchewan and Edmonton Ø Receive substantial SaskCulture Organizational Development Grant, second year of our first multi-year funding from the Saskatoon Credit Union, as well as continued valued support from Yamaha Music Canada Ltd. and the City of Saskatoon Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø Seventh year of Christmas piano recital Ø First year of the Festival of the Heart where students from all of the program sites in Saskatchewan are brought together in Saskatoon to share in music learning, music making and musical friendship
2003-2004: Ø Seventy-one volunteer piano teachers serve over 200 students across Saskatchewan and Edmonton Ø Receive SaskCulture funding through the SMEA as part of their annual grant, third year of our first multi-year funding from the Saskatoon Credit Union, as well as continued valued support from Yamaha Music Canada Ltd. and the City of Saskatoon Ø Students travel to the University of Saskatchewan to hear a student piano recital and tour the Music Department Ø Eighth year of Christmas piano recital and ninth year of holding a year-end recital | |||||||||||||||||
