The Heart of the City Piano Program is an inner city school piano project  that is being sponsored by the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association. The program was founded in the fall of 1995 at Pleasant Hill Community School by Richard Dubé, the school’s music teacher. The intent of this ongoing project is to enhance the lives and learning opportunities of at-risk youth through a structured music program that continues throughout the school year. It is strongly believed that involvement in the Heart of the City Piano Program will help students to make positive lifestyle choices and prevent them from becoming involved in drugs, alcohol and violence.

In the fall of 1999, the Heart of the City Piano Program expanded provincially to include sites at Riverside Community School in Prince Albert thanks to Corinne Olson, Prince Arthur Community School in  Moose Jaw thanks to Melinda Anderson-Grass and to Ken Jenkins and Haultain Schools in Regina thanks to Donna Johnston-Martel.

In the spring of 2002, the Heart of the City Piano Program expanded nationally to include sites in Edmonton, Alberta thanks to Chantal Chauvet, a former volunteer piano teacher at King George Community School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In January of 2005, the Heart of the City Piano Program expanded to Ottawa, Ontario thanks to the hard work and efforts of Bettina Choo and the Circle K Kiwanis Club from the University of Ottawa.

In the fall of 2007, the  Heart of the City Piano Program expanded to Montréal, Québec thanks to the hard work and efforts of Bettina Choo and the Circle K Kiwanis Club from the University of McGill.
